Economical Health Insurance Hindered By Decade-Long Profits
The health care reform now proceeds to the Senate and concerns over costs of legislation now increase.
Supporters of health reform are saying that cost-effective health insurance is within reach if spending is managed.
They have a point there since a lot of health care companies which are listed on the Standard and Poor’s 500 have tripled their profits on average in the last 12 years.
There were substantial losses in most economic areas during a 10-year period. Health care costs have, however, steadily increased since 2000 because of the demand of having to visit a doctor or hospital anytime people get sick or injured.
These increased costs have really made health care insurance much less affordable for a lot of consumers.
The normal scapegoats for more expensive health plans are the health insurers themselves. There is no doubt that health insurance companies had a profitable several years. The six health insurance companies in the S&P 500 made over $10 billion in profits.
It would seem that these substantial profits are standing in the way of affordable health insurance. However, insurance companies are actually one of the least prosperous sectors of the health care industry. Their profits are less than expected, because sales of health insurance increased almost as much as profits.
If insurers are not the one responsible for shortage of cheap health insurance then who is?
Medical device makers and medical suppliers have seen the most growth in the past decade. The latter increased their profits by 15% while the former increased theirs by almost 17%.
The margins of pharmaceutical firms have increased their margins to 25% and they have doubled their profits too.
These industries have been exclusively responsible for the advances in medicine. At the same time, they have increased the costs of insurance on the same period of time.
What can be done about this? Explicit price controls are extremely improbable, but regulations enacted as part of a health care reform bill could nudge the health care industry towards lowering its costs.
Affordable health insurance Tennessee will be more plentiful if health insurers don’t need to pay exorbitant rates for the majority of their supplies and services.
